Stαthis Roukαs is a Greek interdisciplinary artist. His work spans performance, video, installation, photography and language, exploring the performativity of the human body within physical and social contexts. Born in Athens in 1991, Roukas trained in Applied Arts and Interior Architecture before relocating to Berlin, where he currently lives and works.
Roukas’s work explores themes of identity, belonging, societal expectations, desire, trauma, and transcendence. He creates evocative scenarios that invite viewers to reflect on the complexities of the human condition and our relations with each other and the environment. Maintaining a conceptual approach, he playfully challenges the boundaries of social acceptance and questions our perceptions of reality.
His work often revolves around contrasting ideas, portraying characters caught between reality and fantasy, creating dissonant, dreamlike scenes that blur the line between the tangible and the imagined. He is particularly interested in exploring the in-between space formed by opposing forces or emotions and how this state is expressed through uncomfortable body poses.
Aesthetically driven, Roukas aims to present mental health issues through the lens of a disordered, sometimes hidden beauty. His live performances are typically immersive and participatory, involving active audience engagement and physical interaction with the space (site-specific works). His work fosters opportunities for introspection, dialogue, inclusion and deeper connection.
Roukas’s work has been exhibited in museums, galleries, festivals, and alternative spaces across Europe, Japan, Brazil and Ethiopia.
